If you are arriving by airplane, ship or bus:

  • You must go to the customs inspection point.
  • You are allowed to bring, free of duty, merchandise in your personal baggage, which value should not exceed the duty-free allowance. You may import merchandise other than your personal baggage and duty-free allowance by paying the general tax of 16% of the total value of the exceeding merchandise. For this purpose, you must fill out the form Foreign Trade Tax Payment or the simplified online form Federal Tax Payment. You may pay at any authorized bank or treasurer’s office, either in cash or with credit or debit card.
  • You are required to fill out the Customs Declaration for Incoming Passengers.
  • You must push the red/green light.

If you arrive by car:

If you are traveling to Mexico in your own vehicle, please select the lane accordingly:

  • Self-declaration lane: Stay in this lane when carrying merchandise other than your personal baggage or the amount to pay for the exceeding merchandise.
  • Nothing-to-declare lane: Stay in this lane when carrying merchandise that does not exceed the permitted limits and exemptions.

A timely declaration prevents issues and fines when importing merchandise to Mexico.

Important notice

Foreign residents coming to Mexico by vehicle or ship must request a temporary vehicle importation permit.
